TAFF Celebrates International Women's Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day, celebrated in many parts of the world, with focus on women’s achievements in history in areas of economics, politics and the cultural spectrum with love, appreciation and respect. IWD also recognizes the social struggles women continue to face in our modern society with the hope to change the general perception of women.

It’s only in the last century that women attained equal rights lawfully in most civilized societies—the right to employment, the right to vote, to equal taxes, the right to their own property, their marital and reproductive rights. In many ways there are leaps and bounds made in fight for gender equality, while in some ways it seems stifled, much is yet to be done. A woman still earns 75 cents compared to a man’s dollar in wages for the same employment with the same job requirements, is subject to sexual discrimination in the workplace. Gender equality is still a distant dream in many societies where a woman is denied an education, the right to her own body, suffer genital mutilation, traded in marriage by the time she’s twelve; her voice is silenced and she’s expected to remain in subservience to a man, who believes her sole purpose of being is to reproduce.

This month we want to challenge our filmmakers to explore gender equality struggles in our modern society. We are happy to receive submitted films that celebrate some of our brave African women. We want to continue to receive such films in their honor to help re-write the narrative of the perception of women in our society.

Submission Deadline is March 31st
Submission deadline is March 31st, 2016. With deadline less than a month away, time is running out. Selection criteria for all films as follows:
Films that promote African culture
Films that address issues affecting Africa
Films about historic African leaders
Films about historic African landmarks
Films made by Independent African filmmakers

To discourage African Time and to give filmmakers extra days to make traveling arrangements, we are eliminating the Late deadline of April 10th and sticking to the the March 31st regular deadline. Selected films will now be announced on April 4th, 2016 instead of May 1st. There have been an overwhelming response to the submissions process that we simply want to get the ball rolling as the festival is mere months away. As we approach our submission deadline, we would like to thank the many filmmakers that would be part of this groundbreaking movement on 4th of July weekend by submitting their films to TAFF. We are happy to announce, with good measure, that we have our work cut out for us in the selection process. We are commending our filmmakers for a job well done. If you are still working hard to complete your film and were planning to submit it by April 10th, please contact us immediately from www.theafricanfilmfestival.org.
